Create your community

Getting started · 4 min read

Create a new community from the creator dashboard at app.mateflow.com. It takes three steps: choose a template, name your community, and pick a platform plan — most plans start with a free trial.

Who can do this: Anyone with a Mateflow account. In a shared workspace, workspace Owners, Admins, and Members can create communities; Viewers can't. · Where: Web (creator dashboard). · Plan: You choose a platform plan as the last step.

Open the Create a new community page

  1. Sign in at app.mateflow.com, or sign up for an account. Signing up is free and doesn't need a credit card.
  2. Go to Dashboard (app.mateflow.com) → Communities and click New community. If you don't have a community yet, click Create your first community.

The Create a new community page shows three steps: Template, Name & domain, and Plan & review. Your answers are kept if you reload the page. Clicking Cancel on the first step discards them.

Step 1: Choose a community template

A template sets up starter spaces, categories, welcome posts, and a theme. You can change everything later.

  1. Optionally click a Community type — Creator, Brand, Professional, Education, Nonprofit, or Other — to see recommended templates first. This is only a filter.
  2. Click Preview on a template to see what's included: Spaces & categories, Welcome posts, Features enabled, Member onboarding, and Appearance.
  3. Select a template, or choose Start blank to get just a default Home space and a General category.
  4. Click Continue.

You can apply a template to an existing community later. See Apply a community template.

Step 2: Name your community and choose a subdomain

  1. Enter a Community name (up to 100 characters). Members see this name.
  2. Check the Subdomain. Mateflow suggests one from the name; it becomes your address, for example yourname.mate.so. Use 1–30 lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes. If you see Already taken — try another., pick a different one. If the name can't be turned into a subdomain (for example, a name in Chinese or Japanese), type one yourself.
  3. Optionally click Add a description (up to 500 characters).
  4. Click Continue.

Prefer your own domain? Connect it after the community is created. See Connect a custom domain.

Step 3: Choose a platform plan and review

  1. Choose Monthly or Annual billing, then select a plan. Click Compare plans to see every plan's features side by side. For enterprise needs, click Talk to sales →.
  2. If your template includes something the selected plan doesn't, you'll see Some parts of this template won't be created. Your community is still created; you can add those parts after upgrading.
  3. In Review, check Starting point and Name & address. Click Edit to go back.
  4. Click the button at the bottom. Its label depends on the plan:
    • Start free trial — the plan has a free trial. No credit card is required.
    • Subscribe — the plan has no trial. You're sent to a secure checkout to pay.
    • Create community — the plan is free.

The trial length and prices are shown on this step. This platform plan is what you pay Mateflow — not a Subscription Plan that members pay you. See How Mateflow is organized.

What happens after you create your community

When the community is ready, you see Community created — taking you to your community homepage. Mateflow signs you in to the new community and opens its homepage. The first time, a Welcome to [your community name]! message appears: click Start setup to open your setup checklist, or Look around first to close it.

A few things are set for you:

  • Your community's default language matches the language you use in the creator dashboard. See Set your community's language and region.
  • You're the community's Owner.
  • You can change the name, description, and subdomain later in Admin → Settings → General. The subdomain can be changed once every 30 days.

If creating your community doesn't finish

If setup with a template fails, you see Community creation didn't finish. Choose Retry, Pick another template, or Use blank template. Mateflow never switches to a blank community without asking you.
