How Mateflow is organized

Getting started · 4 min read

Mateflow has three places you work in: the creator dashboard, where you create communities and pay for them; your community, where members post, chat, and learn; and the community's admin console, where you run it. This article explains how they fit together and defines the terms the rest of the help center uses.

Who this is for: Community owners and their teams. · Where: Web for the creator dashboard and admin console; members can also use the community in the Mateflow app for iOS and Android. · Plan: Some features mentioned here depend on your platform plan.

The creator dashboard (app.mateflow.com)

The creator dashboard at app.mateflow.com is the home of your Mateflow account. Use the creator dashboard to:

  • create a community (Dashboard (app.mateflow.com) → Communities → New community);
  • see each community's Overview, Launch checklist, Domain, and Plan;
  • see billing for all your communities under Billing, and member payments under Revenue;
  • invite teammates under Workspace.

The creator dashboard doesn't manage members, posts, or community settings. For that, open the community and click Open community admin. This button is shown to the community's owner.

Workspaces and communities

A workspace is a container in the creator dashboard. A workspace holds your communities, the teammates who help manage them, and the payment cards that pay for them. You can have more than one workspace (New workspace in the workspace switcher). Workspace roles (Owner, Admin, Member, Viewer) only control what teammates can do in the creator dashboard.

A community (previously called a site) is what your members join. Each community has its own address (yourname.mate.so, or your own custom domain), its own members and content, its own admin console, and its own platform plan.

Your community and its admin console

Members use your community on the web and in the Mateflow app. The admin console lives inside the community at /admin. People also call it the community admin; in the profile menu it's Admin Dashboard. The admin console is where you manage members, content, spaces, moderation, monetization, appearance, settings, and the community's billing. The admin console is available on the web only. See Find your way around the admin console.

Spaces and categories

Spaces hold your community's content. Every space has a type: Feed, Article, Gallery, Radio (podcasts), Chat, Q&A, or Course. Categories group spaces in the sidebar. Manage spaces in Admin → Community → Spaces and categories in Admin → Community → Categories. See How spaces work.

Access groups

Access groups (previously called member tiers) decide which spaces a member can get into. An admin can put a member in an access group, or a member joins one automatically by buying a Subscription Plan that grants it. Members mostly see a group by its name, such as "Pro", rather than the words "access group". Manage access groups in Admin → Members → Access Groups; this feature depends on your platform plan. See How access groups work.

Platform plan vs Subscription Plans

Mateflow has two different kinds of plans. Don't mix them up:

Platform plan Subscription Plans
Who pays whom You pay Mateflow for your community Members pay your community (paid membership, paywall)
What it controls Which features and limits your community has Which access group a paying member gets
Where to manage it Admin → Billing, and Billing in the creator dashboard Admin → Monetization → Subscription Plans

Each community has its own platform plan, which usually starts with a free trial. See Your platform plan and free trial and Create a subscription plan.

Team roles in a community

Community roles are separate from workspace roles. Community roles decide what someone can do in the admin console:

  • Owner — owns the community (usually the person who created it). Full access, including owner-only pages such as Admin → Billing → Add-ons.
  • Admin — full access to the admin console.
  • Moderator (shown as "Mod") — works with content, spaces, moderation, and courses.
  • Billing admin — works with the community's billing only.

Custom roles are available in Admin → Settings → Team & Roles, depending on your platform plan. A space moderator manages a single space. See Team roles and permissions.
