A space is where a group of posts, chats, lessons, or questions lives in your community. Create a new space whenever you want a separate place for a topic, a group of members, or a type of content.
Who can do this: Community owners and admins. Moderators can't create spaces. · Where: Web. · Plan: Some space types, and how many spaces you can have, depend on your platform plan.
Open the Create Space form
You can start a new space from either the community or the admin console. Both open the same three-step Create Space form.
- From the sidebar: hover over a space category's name, click the ⋮ (Category actions) menu, then click Create space. The new space is placed in that category.
- From the admin console: go to Admin → Community → Spaces and click Create Space.
If the Create Space button shows an upgrade prompt, your community has reached the number of spaces your platform plan allows. See Check plan usage and limits.
Step 1: Choose a space type
The space type decides how content in the space looks and what members can post. You can't change a space's type after it's created, so pick the one that fits how the space will be used.
| Space type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Feed Space | General discussions and posts in a timeline |
| Article Space | Long-form articles (a blog) |
| Gallery Space | Photos and videos in a grid; every post needs media |
| Radio Space | Podcasts and audio shows; every post needs an audio file |
| Chat Space | Real-time group chat |
| Q&A Space | Questions with upvotes and accepted answers |
| Course Space | A course with sections, lessons, and progress tracking |
A space type with an Upgrade label isn't included in your platform plan. Chat Spaces can also be locked when you've reached your plan's chat space limit.
Events and live streaming aren't space types. You can turn them on for any space after it's created. See Turn on events and live streaming in a space.
Step 2: Set the space's privacy
The privacy setting controls who can see the space and its content.
- Public: anyone can see and join the space.
- Private: everyone can see that the space exists, but its content is locked until the member's join request is approved or they unlock access, for example by buying it.
- Secret: invite-only. The space is hidden from non-members everywhere in the community, including search and discovery.
You can change the privacy and choose how members join (open, by request, paid, or invite-only) later in the space's settings. See Set a space's privacy and join policy.
Step 3: Add the space's details
- Enter a Name (up to 100 characters) and, optionally, choose an icon.
- Choose a Category. The category decides where the space appears in the sidebar. To make a new category, click Add space category.
- Add a Description (up to 254 characters). Members see it on the space's page and when they browse spaces.
- Click Create Space.
For a Course Space, this step asks for a Course Name, an optional Subtitle, a longer description, a Cover Image, and a Course Avatar. The button reads Create Course.
What happens after you create a space
When the space is created, Mateflow opens it for you. A new Course Space opens with its course settings, so you can start adding sections and lessons.
Next, you'll usually want to:
- decide who can post, reply, and react. See Control who can post, reply, and react in a space;
- add space moderators. See Add space moderators;
- for a paid or members-only space, choose which access groups unlock it. See How access groups work.
