Each space has two participation settings: who can start new posts, and who can reply, react, and repost. Use them to make an announcements space where only your team posts, an open discussion space, or anything in between. They replace the older Allow member posts and Allow member replies switches.
Who can do this: Community owners and admins, and space admins. Space moderators can't change these settings. · Where: Web (the space's Manage panel) and the iOS and Android apps. · Plan: Available on every platform plan.
Posting and replying permission levels
Both settings offer the same levels:
- Anyone who can view: anyone signed in who can see the space, even if they haven't joined it. Only offered for Public spaces.
- Members only: people who have joined the space.
- Admins and moderators: only the space's admins and moderators. Community owners and admins can always post.
In a Private or Secret space, only members can read the content, so Anyone who can view isn't offered. In the app, the same levels are labeled Anyone, Members, and Admins & moderators.
Change who can post and reply in a space
- Open the space's Manage panel: click the gear icon (Manage) on the space's page, or open the space's ⋯ menu in the sidebar and click Manage space.
- Click Access Policy.
- Open Advanced.
- Set the posting setting and the replying setting (their names depend on the space type; see below).
- Click Save Changes.
In the app: open the space, tap ⋯, tap Manage space, tap Access & permissions, then open Advanced.
Permission setting names by space type
The two settings are named after what members do in each type of space:
| Space type | Posting setting | Replying setting |
|---|---|---|
| Feed Space | Who can post | Who can reply, react and repost |
| Article Space | Who can publish articles | Who can comment, react and repost |
| Gallery Space | Who can upload media | Who can comment, react and repost |
| Radio Space | Who can publish episodes | Who can comment, react and repost |
| Q&A Space | Who can ask a question | Who can answer |
| Chat Space | Who can send messages | Who can reply and react |
The app words a few of these differently, for example Who can start a topic instead of Who can post. Course Spaces don't have these settings.
One setting covers replies, reactions, and reposts
The replying setting controls replies (or comments, or answers), likes and emoji reactions, and reposts together. There are no separate switches for likes or reposts. Reposting is always turned off in Q&A Spaces.
Make a read-only announcements space
To let only your team post while members read and respond:
- Set the posting setting to Admins and moderators.
- Set the replying setting to Members only, or to Admins and moderators if you want no replies at all.
Members don't see the post composer in that space. If the space has no posts yet, they see "Only admins and moderators can post in this space."
In a Public space, if neither setting is Members only, joining gives members nothing extra, so the space shows no join button.
Other settings that affect posting in a space
- Require post approval (in Manage → Moderation rules): new posts wait in the space's Review queue until a moderator approves them. See Review held and pending content.
- Blocked Keywords (in Moderation rules): posts containing these words are flagged automatically.
- Restricted Topic (in Topics): only space admins and moderators can assign that topic to posts.
- Allow members to create events and Allow members to go live (in Features). See Turn on events and live streaming in a space.
- Who can reply on a single post: authors can choose Everyone, People you follow, Only people you mention, or Turn off comments. See Comments, reactions, and reply settings.
- Moderators can lock comments on one post. See Pin, lock, or hide a post.
Members who are muted or banned can't post or reply, whatever these settings say.
Troubleshooting: a member can't post in a space
Symptom: A member doesn't see the composer or the reply box in a space. Why it happens: The member hasn't joined the space and the setting is Members only; the setting is Admins and moderators; the member is muted or banned; or the space is archived ("This space is archived and read-only."). Fix: Check the space's Access Policy → Advanced settings and the member's status. See Troubleshoot: members can't join or post.
