Space roles let someone look after one space without giving them power over your whole community. Make a trusted member a space moderator to handle posts, reports, and members in that space, or a space admin to also run its settings. This is how you appoint channel moderators, group leaders, or hosts for a single space.
Who can do this: Community owners and admins, and the space's admins. · Where: Web (the space's Manage panel, also reachable from Admin → Community → Spaces) and the iOS and Android apps. · Plan: Available on every platform plan.
Space roles: admin, moderator, and member
Each space has three roles, separate from a person's community role:
| Space role | What they can do in that space |
|---|---|
| Space Admin | Everything a space moderator can do, plus change the space's settings (Basics & branding, layout, Features, Access Policy, Topics, Collections, Moderation rules), change space roles, create invite links, export the member list, and archive or restore the space |
| Space Moderator | Delete and pin posts in the space, work the space's Review queue, approve Join Requests, mute, ban, or remove members, and manage the space's events |
| Member | Take part according to the space's permission settings |
Space moderators can't change the space's settings, topics, collections, or moderation rules, and can't change anyone's role. In a Q&A Space, space admins and moderators can also accept answers and close questions. Auto-moderation rules skip space admins and moderators in their own space.
Deleting a space is reserved for community owners and admins and the person who created the space. Other space admins can archive it but not delete it.
Make a member a space moderator on the web
The person must be a member of the space first. If they aren't, invite them with the Invite button on the Members page, or ask them to join.
- Open the space's Manage panel: click the gear icon (Manage) on the space's page, or open the space's ⋯ menu in the sidebar and click Manage space. From the admin console, go to Admin → Community → Spaces, open the space's ⋯ menu, and click Members.
- Click Members.
- Find the person with Search members... and open the actions menu on their row.
- Click Make Moderator (or Make Admin).
- In Change Member Role, check the change and click Confirm Change.
To remove the role, choose Make Member. Demoting a space admin shows a warning that they'll lose admin privileges.
Make a member a space moderator in the app
- Open the space, tap ⋯, then tap Manage space.
- Tap Members.
- Touch and hold the member's row to open Manage member.
- Tap Promote to moderator or Promote to admin. To undo, tap Demote to member.
Who can change which space roles
- Community owners and admins can change anyone's space role, except the space's creator.
- Space admins can make members moderators or admins, and demote moderators. They can't change another space admin or themselves.
- Space moderators can't change roles. They can mute, ban, or remove members, but only people with a lower space role.
- Nobody can change their own space role, and the space's creator is protected ("This action cannot be performed on the space owner.").
Community moderators are not space staff
A community moderator (the Mod role in Admin → Members) works from the admin console: Content, Community, Moderation, and Courses. That role doesn't make them staff of any space. They don't get a space's Manage panel, can't accept answers in a Q&A Space, and auto-moderation rules still check their posts. To give a community moderator these powers in a space, also make them a space moderator there.
Only the community owner can change community roles. See Team roles and permissions.
Where space staff appear
- The space's page shows a Space Team panel with its admins and moderators.
- On the space's member list, staff are labeled Space Admin or Space Moderator.
- In Admin → Members → All Members, a member's page lists the spaces they belong to and their role in each.
Course Spaces work differently
In a Course Space, the Manage panel shows Students and Team instead of Members, and space moderators don't get a management panel. Only course admins manage a course. See Create a course.
