Comments, reactions, and reply settings

Posts & content · 4 min read

Members respond to posts with reactions (likes and emoji), comments (replies), reposts, and quotes. This article covers each of these, plus how to sort comments, switch between flat and threaded (nested) replies, and limit who can reply to your post.

Who can do this: Everyone who can view a post, within the space's permissions. Post authors choose their post's reply settings. Space admins set a space's default reply view. Community owners and admins choose the reaction emoji. · Where: Web, and the iOS and Android apps. Community settings are in the admin console on the web. · Plan: Available on every platform plan.

React to a post or comment with emoji

  • Like (❤️): click the heart under a post or comment. Click it again to remove your like.
  • Other emoji: hover over the heart on a computer, or press and hold it on a phone, to open the reaction quick bar. Pick an emoji.

Each person has one reaction per post. Picking another emoji replaces your first one.

In Q&A Spaces, questions and answers show only an upvote.

Owners and admins choose the emoji in Admin → Settings → Communication:

  • Reactions turns emoji reactions on or off.
  • Reaction emoji set chooses and orders the emoji. ❤️ is always included.

When Reactions is off, members only have the ❤️ Like. Existing reactions are kept.

See who reacted to a post

Reactions appear as emoji chips under the post. Click a chip to open Reactions. It has an All tab and one tab per emoji. Click the likes count to see the Likes list, or the reposts count to see Reposts.

In the app, tap a chip to open Reactions.

Reply to a post or comment

Click the comment button, or the reply box under the post. The composer shows "Reply to this post". Replies can include photos, videos, GIFs, and voice messages. To reply to a comment, use that comment's reply button, and the replies nest under it.

If comments need approval in that space, you see "Comment submitted — it will appear once a moderator approves it."

Sort comments and switch between flat and threaded replies

On a post's page on the web, click Sort replies (the sliders icon) and choose:

  • Display mode: Flat (one list) or Threaded (nested replies under each comment).
  • Sort replies by: Top replies or Recent replies.

In the app, tap the reply settings bar above the comments (for example Top replies · Threaded). Your choice is remembered for each space. Q&A questions don't offer the threaded view.

How deep threaded replies go:

  • Replies can nest to any depth.
  • The web indents up to four levels (two on a narrow screen). Deeper replies are indented less.
  • The app indents two levels. Deeper replies line up at the second level with Replying to and the person's handle.

Space default: space admins can set the default in the space's Manage panel → Layout & display → Default reply view (Flat or Threaded). Members can still switch for each post.

Choose who can reply to your post (reply settings)

Before you publish, click Who can reply in the composer and choose:

  • Everyone: anyone who can reply in the space.
  • People you follow: people you follow, plus anyone you mention.
  • Only people you mention: only the people @mentioned in the post.
  • Turn off comments: nobody can reply, quote, or repost.

The app labels these Anyone, People you follow, Only people you mention, and Nobody. You can change the setting later by editing the post.

The setting also limits who can quote and repost the post. When comments are limited, other members see a notice such as "The author turned off comments on this post." Existing replies stay visible. You can still reply to your own post, and so can community admins.

The space's own Who can reply, react and repost setting applies first. See Control who can post, reply, and react in a space. Moderators can also close comments on any post; see Pin, lock, or hide a post.

Repost or quote a post

Click the repost button under a post:

  • Repost: shares the post to your followers as it is. Undo Repost takes it back.
  • Quote post: adds your own comment on top ("Quote this post").

Pasting a link to a post from your community into a new post also turns it into a quote. The post's page lists quotes under Quotes.
