Transfer community ownership

Your plan & billing · 5 min read

You can change who owns a community from the creator dashboard (app.mateflow.com) in two ways: transfer one community to another Mateflow creator account, or transfer your whole workspace to a teammate. Transferring one community takes effect immediately and can't be undone, so check the requirements first.

Who can do this: One community: the workspace owner and workspace admins. A whole workspace: the workspace owner only. · Where: Web (creator dashboard). The admin console has no transfer option. · Plan: Not tied to a platform plan, but a community's platform plan must be cancelled before it's transferred.

Before you transfer a community

Before you transfer a community, make sure all of these are true, or the transfer won't go through.

  • The community has no active platform plan. A platform plan that's active, in a free trial, or past due blocks the transfer, so cancel it first in Admin → Billing → Overview. A cancelled plan still counts as active until the end of its billing period, so you can transfer the community once that date has passed. See Change or cancel your plan.
  • No member has an active subscription. All member subscriptions (what members pay you, not your platform plan) must have ended. Check Admin → Monetization → Subscribers. See Manage subscribers, payments, and refunds.
  • The recipient has a Mateflow creator account. That's the account they use at app.mateflow.com. If they don't, ask them to sign up there first.
  • You're the workspace owner or an admin. Workspace members and viewers don't see Transfer ownership.
  • The community isn't scheduled for deletion. Restore it first. See Pause, delete, or restore a community.

Transfer one community to another account

To transfer one community, start from its Overview in the creator dashboard.

  1. Go to Dashboard (app.mateflow.com) → Communities, open the community, and go to Overview.
  2. In the Community management card, click Transfer ownership.
  3. In Transfer community ownership, enter the Recipient email.
  4. Click Send transfer request.
  5. If Confirm your identity appears, enter your Current password, plus an authenticator or backup code if you use two-factor authentication, and click Verify.

When you see Transfer request sent., the transfer is already complete. The recipient doesn't need to accept anything, and you can't cancel or undo it.

What happens when a community is transferred

When a community is transferred, these changes take effect right away:

  • The recipient becomes the owner. There's no pending request and no undo.
  • The community moves to the recipient's workspace. It goes into the first workspace the recipient created, and nobody can choose a different one. Your workspace's teammates lose access to it.
  • The previous owner becomes a regular member. They stay in the community without owner or admin rights, and they're signed out.
  • Stripe is disconnected. Members can't pay until the new owner connects their own Stripe account.
  • Billing doesn't carry over. The new owner pays for a platform plan with their own card.

What the new owner needs to do after a community transfer

After a community is transferred to them, the new owner sets up billing and payments with their own accounts:

  1. Subscribe to a platform plan with their own card. See Your platform plan and free trial.
  2. Connect Stripe on Admin → Monetization → Stripe Connect, using their own Stripe account. Until then, members can't pay. See Connect Stripe and get paid.
  3. Restore team access if needed. If the previous owner should keep helping, the new owner can give them a community role again. See Team roles and permissions.

Transfer your whole workspace to a teammate

Transferring a workspace hands every community in it, and the right to manage the workspace, to one teammate at once.

  1. Go to Dashboard (app.mateflow.com) → Workspace and click Transfer ownership.
  2. Under New owner, select a teammate. Only active teammates are listed. If you see No eligible members. Invite someone and have them accept before transferring., invite them first. See Invite teammates to your workspace.
  3. Click Transfer ownership, and confirm your identity if asked.

Ownership transferred then shows how many communities moved to the new owner. You stay in the workspace as an admin.

Take over billing and Stripe after a workspace transfer

A workspace transfer doesn't move billing or Stripe: each community's platform plan keeps charging the previous owner's card, and member payments keep going to the previous owner's Stripe account. Ownership transferred lists these under Follow-ups needed for each community:

  • Billing still charges the previous owner - the new owner must take over this community's subscription.
  • Payouts still go to the previous owner's Stripe account - the new owner must reconnect Stripe on this community.

Neither has a one-click takeover. For each community, the new owner:

  • Takes over the platform plan by cancelling it and subscribing again with their own card. See Change or cancel your plan.
  • Reconnects Stripe on Admin → Monetization → Stripe Connect by disconnecting the previous owner's account, then connecting their own. Disconnecting makes member subscriptions that are still running fail at their next renewal, so plan the switch first.
