Push notifications alert you on your phone when something happens in your community, such as a mention, a reply, a new follower, or an event reminder. They come from the Mateflow app for iPhone and Android. Mateflow doesn't send push notifications to web browsers.
Who can do this: Anyone signed in to a community in the Mateflow app. · Where: iOS and Android app, plus your phone's system settings. You can also change which alerts you get on the web under Settings → Notifications. · Plan: Not plan-dependent.
Turn on push notifications in the app
The app doesn't ask for permission when you first open it. To turn push notifications on:
- Sign in to your community in the app.
- Tap Notifications in the tab bar.
- On the Get pushed when it matters banner, tap Turn on.
- When your phone asks, allow notifications.
If you declined notifications before, your phone won't ask again. Tapping Turn on opens the phone's settings for Mateflow instead. Turn on Allow Notifications (iPhone) or Notifications (Android) there, then close and reopen the app.
Choose which push notifications you get
In the app, open the menu (☰) and tap Settings and privacy → Notifications. You can also tap the settings icon (Notification settings) on the Notifications tab.
- Push notifications: the main switch for all push alerts on your phone.
- Push alerts by type: turn individual alerts on or off:
- Mentions
- Comments & replies
- Likes
- Reposts
- New followers
- Direct messages
- Events and live broadcasts
- Badges earned
- System notifications
- Courses
- Channels: In-app and Email work on their own. Turning off In-app doesn't turn off push.
Changes save as soon as you flip a switch. Everything is on by default. Security alerts, such as a sign-in from a new device, have no switch of their own and follow only the main Push notifications switch.
On the web: go to Settings → Notifications. On the Preferences tab, the Push Notifications switch controls "Push notifications in the mobile app on iOS and Android". The Categories tab has a Push switch for each type. Click Save Notification Settings.
Get fewer notifications from one space
To quiet a busy space, open it in the app and tap the bell button in the space's header. Under Notify me about, choose one of these:
- All activity
- Highlights: replies, quotes, @mentions, accepted answers, and course updates, but no likes or reposts
- Mentions only
- Off
With Off, you still get reminders for events you've joined.
Push notifications for direct messages
New direct messages reach your phone as push notifications, controlled by the Direct messages switch under Push alerts by type (on by default).
- Muted conversations, and messages from people you've muted, don't send a push.
- The conversation you have open doesn't send a push.
- A busy conversation sends at most one push every 2 minutes.
Direct messages don't appear in your notifications list and aren't emailed, so the web's Email switch for Direct Messages doesn't affect them. An @mention in a conversation also sends a separate mention notification. On the web, check Messages.
What happens when you tap a push notification
Tapping a notification opens the related post, event, chat message, live stream, or profile in the app. If the app can't find it, the app opens the Notifications tab.
When you open the Notifications tab, the badge on the app icon is cleared and your notifications are marked as read.
Troubleshooting: push notifications not arriving
Symptom: You get no push notifications at all. Why it happens: Notifications for Mateflow are turned off in your phone's settings, or the Push notifications switch in the app is off. Fix: In your phone's settings, allow notifications for Mateflow. In the app, check Settings and privacy → Notifications → Push notifications.
Symptom: Some kinds of alerts arrive, others don't. Why it happens: That type is off under Push alerts by type, or on the web's Categories tab. Fix: Turn the type back on.
Symptom: Nothing arrives from one space. Why it happens: Your notification level for that space is Mentions only or Off. Fix: Tap the space's bell button and choose All activity or Highlights.
Symptom: Notifications stopped after you signed out, or they come from the wrong community. Why it happens: Your phone gets push notifications only for the one community you're signed in to in the app. Signing out stops them. Fix: Sign in again to the community you want alerts from. See Sign in to your community in the app.
Symptom: You expected a notification in your web browser. Why it happens: Push notifications only go to the phone app. Fix: Install the app, or use in-app and email notifications on the web. See Choose your notifications.
On iPhone, Focus modes and Do Not Disturb can also silence Mateflow. Mateflow has no quiet hours setting of its own; to hear less for a while, mute a conversation, a space, or a person.
