Lock the app with Face ID or fingerprint

Mobile app · 3 min read

App lock is a biometric lock that keeps other people out of the Mateflow app on your phone. When it's on, the app asks for Face ID, Touch ID, or your fingerprint each time you open it or come back to it. It's useful if you share your phone or keep private conversations in your community.

Who can do this: Anyone signed in to the Mateflow app. · Where: iOS and Android app. There's no app lock on the web. · Plan: Not plan-dependent.

Before you turn on app lock

Set up Face ID, Touch ID, or a fingerprint (or face unlock on Android) in your phone's settings first. If your phone has none set up, the app shows "Set up Face ID or Touch ID in iOS Settings first." and leaves app lock off. Android phones see the same message.

Turn on app lock

  1. In the Mateflow app, open the menu (☰) and tap Settings and privacy.
  2. Tap Appearance.
  3. Under Security, turn on App lock ("Require Face ID / Touch ID when opening Mateflow").

The app locks right away and asks you to unlock it, so you can check that it works. The first time the app uses Face ID on an iPhone, iOS may ask you to allow it.

Unlock the Mateflow app

When the app is locked, you see a black screen with LOCKED and "Welcome back" with your first name. Your phone asks for Face ID, Touch ID, or your fingerprint right away ("Unlock Mateflow").

  • If you cancel or it doesn't recognize you, tap the Face ID button (Tap to unlock) to try again.
  • Tap Use passcode instead to unlock with your phone's passcode, PIN, pattern, or password.

Anything you were doing, such as a post you were writing, is still there after you unlock.

When the app locks

  • Every time you open the app from scratch.
  • Every time you leave it: switch to another app, go to the home screen, or lock your phone.

Pulling down Control Center or the notification shade doesn't lock the app, and neither does the Face ID or fingerprint prompt itself.

Turn off app lock

Go to Settings and privacy → Appearance and turn off App lock. The app stops asking right away.

Things to know about app lock

  • It's a setting for this phone. It isn't tied to your account or community. It stays on if you log out and sign in to another community, and it doesn't apply to the app on your other devices.
  • It doesn't sign you out. App lock only covers the screen. You stay signed in, and push notifications keep arriving while the app is locked. Tapping one takes you to the lock screen first.
  • It depends on your phone's biometrics. If you later remove all faces and fingerprints from your phone, the app can't check them and opens without asking. Set biometrics up again to keep the lock working.
  • It isn't account security. App lock protects this phone only. To protect your account when someone signs in from another device, turn on two-factor authentication. See Turn on two-factor authentication.
