Use the audit log

Moderation & safety · 3 min read

The audit log is a record of actions taken in your community's admin console: who did what, to whom or what, and when. It covers moderation, members, roles, spaces, content, settings, security, billing, and integrations. Use it to check a teammate's changes, trace a moderation decision, or keep a compliance record.

Who can do this: Community owners and admins. Moderators can't open the audit log. · Where: Web, in the admin console. · Plan: The audit log depends on your platform plan. If your plan doesn't include it, the page shows a lock.

Open the audit log

Go to Admin → Moderation → Audit Log. Owners and admins see every category of entry for the whole community; entries aren't filtered by what each admin manages. Each row shows:

  • Action: what happened, for example "Member banned", "Role assigned", "Registration mode changed", or "Report dismissed".
  • Actor: who did it. System means the action wasn't taken by a person, for example an automatic action.
  • Target: what it was done to, such as a user, post, event, or space.
  • Date: when it happened.

Click a row to open the entry's details.

Filter and search the audit log

  • Search audit log...: a keyword search that matches the action and the target, within the selected date range.
  • Category: Members, Roles, Moderation, Spaces, Content, Settings, Security, Billing, or Integrations.
  • Actor: show only actions by one person.
  • Date range: limit the list to a period. With no date range selected, the list shows the last 90 days. Choose an earlier range to see older entries.

Your filters are kept in the page address, so you can bookmark or share a filtered view with another admin.

What an audit log entry shows

The details panel adds:

  • Source: where the action came from.
  • IP address and User agent: the network address and browser or app used, when recorded.
  • Changes: the fields that changed, with old and new values. A removed value shows (cleared). If nothing was recorded, you see "No field changes recorded."

Export the audit log as CSV

  1. Set the filters and date range you want.
  2. Click Export CSV. The file downloads with the rows that match your filters.

CSV is the only export format. One export holds up to 10,000 rows. If you see "Export was truncated — narrow the date range to capture all rows.", the export hit that limit. Export shorter date ranges one at a time.

What the audit log records

The audit log covers actions such as:

  • Moderation: report decisions (dismiss, warn, remove, suspend, ban, ban from space), unbans, and unsuspensions.
  • Members and roles: invitations, bans and suspensions from member profiles, role changes, and custom roles created, updated, or deleted.
  • Settings and security: registration mode, login providers, and impersonation (an admin signing in as a member).
  • Billing: platform plan changes, payment methods, coupons, and monetization settings.
  • Integrations and spaces: automation rules and space categories.

It isn't a log of everyday member activity, such as posting or commenting, although some member events like signing up or requesting to join are recorded. For moderation decisions made by AI, see Admin → Moderation → AI Activity. See Use AI to moderate content.

Moderators don't have the audit log. What they can see is a reported item's past actions, in the Target History card when they open a report from Admin → Moderation → Reports Queue.

Audit log in the creator dashboard

The creator dashboard has its own, separate audit log for your Mateflow account: Dashboard (app.mateflow.com) → Settings → Audit log. It records security-relevant actions on your account in the categories Authentication, Billing, Community, Team, Security, and Integration. Actions by Mateflow staff show as Staff action. Click Export to download it.

Use the community's Audit Log for what happens inside one community's admin console, and the creator dashboard's Audit log for your own Mateflow account.
