You can record an interactive video room, audio room, or webinar and publish it as a replay (a recording, or on-demand video) that members watch after the session. This article covers turning recording on, recording consent, starting and stopping a recording, where replays appear, and taking a replay down.
Who can do this: The room's owner (the person who set it up), hosts, and co-hosts start and stop recording. Room moderators can't. Community owners and admins take replays down in the admin console. · Where: Web and the iOS and Android apps. Taking a replay down is on the web. · Plan: Live sessions depend on your platform plan, and recording draws on your monthly live allowance. Recording isn't available during a free trial.
Allow recording when you set up a live room
Recording is off unless you turn it on for the session:
- Start now: when you set up the room, turn on Allow recording.
- Schedule: turn on Record and publish a replay. You can change it in the session's Manage console until the session starts.
- In the app: turn on Allow recording when you create the room.
This doesn't start a recording. It lets a host start one, and everyone who joins is asked to agree first. Recording can't be switched on once people are in the room, so decide before you open it. To go live, see Go live: stream to your community.
Recording consent in a live room
In a room that allows recording, everyone sees "This room may be recorded" before they join. They click Agree and join, or Don't join to stay on the page and use the chat only. In the app, the choices are Agree and join and Do not agree, go back. A recording includes people's camera, microphone, and name.
While a recording runs, a Recording label shows. Anyone can click Opt out (in the app, Withdraw and leave) to leave the room's audio and video. See Manage a live room: stage, speakers, and participants.
Start and stop a recording
- Click Start for everyone to open the room. You can only record an open room.
- Click Record. If someone hasn't agreed yet, Mateflow tells you how many, for example "1 person hasn't agreed to recording yet."
- To finish, click Stop recording and confirm.
Each room can be recorded only once: "Recording can't be restarted in this room once it's stopped." Afterwards the room shows "This room has already been recorded." In the app, tap Record and Stop recording in the room.
How recording uses the live allowance
Recording draws on your live allowance at 5×: about 5 participant-hours for every hour recorded, on top of the room's own usage. When the allowance is used up, Record is refused with Live allowance used up, but the room keeps running. See Check live streaming usage and limits.
Recording during a free trial
Recording isn't available during your community's free trial. Clicking Record on the web shows "Recording isn't available during the free trial." Once you subscribe to a platform plan, hosts can record. See Your platform plan and free trial.
Where live replays appear
After the session ends, its page shows "The replay is being prepared". This usually takes a few minutes. Then the status changes to Replay ready and the replay plays on the same page. It also appears:
- in the Replays tab on the Live page, on the web and in the app;
- on a linked event's page, as Watch replay;
- in a notification to members: "Replay of [title] is ready".
A course lesson linked to the session can count as complete when Attended or watched replay. People who can't access the space see Join to watch. Turning live off in a space hides its replays.
Edit a replay's title, description, or cover
Open the session's page and click Manage. Under Broadcast details, change the Title, About, or Cover, then click Save changes. The recording itself can't be edited or downloaded, and a session can't be deleted once it has started.
Take down a replay in the admin console
- Go to Admin → Content → Live. To find replays, filter by Replay ready.
- In the session's row, click the crossed-out eye icon (Take down replay).
- Choose a Reason (required): Policy violation, Technical problem, Requested by the host, or Other. Optionally add Details (optional).
- Click Take down replay.
The replay is removed right away, and the action is recorded in the audit log. There's no option to put a taken-down replay back. When you stop a running session with Terminate live stream, Also take down the replay is ticked by default.
Add a replay link to a past event
For an event you hosted outside Mateflow, such as on Zoom, you can post its recording on the event page. Open the event, click Manage event, and click Edit. Under Replay, paste a Replay URL (a YouTube, Vimeo, or Mux link) and, optionally, set Replay available at. Members then see Watch replay on the event. See Create an event.
