Your community's AI assistant (AI Copilot) answers members' questions from your knowledge base and community posts. You turn it on, choose which AI features members get, and customize how the assistant looks, all on one page: Admin → AI Copilot → Settings.
Who can do this: Owners and admins. Moderators and billing admins can't change AI Copilot settings. · Where: Web (admin console). Your changes also apply to the AI assistant in the Mateflow app. · Plan: Requires a platform plan that includes AI Copilot.
Before you set up the AI assistant
- If the AI Copilot pages show AI Copilot isn't included in your plan, your platform plan doesn't include AI. See Check plan usage and limits.
- The AI assistant needs content to answer from: a knowledge base, your community's posts, or both. See Add knowledge sources for your AI assistant and Choose which spaces your AI assistant can search.
Turn the AI assistant on or off
The Enable AI Assistant switch is the master switch for every AI Copilot feature in your community, including the AI chatbot and AI writing help.
- Go to Admin → AI Copilot → Settings.
- Turn Enable AI Assistant on or off.
- Click Save.
While the switch is off, members don't see any AI Copilot features, and the rest of the Settings page is greyed out. Other AI Copilot pages show AI Copilot is disabled, and changes you make there take effect once you turn AI back on. Admin → AI Copilot → Overview shows AI Copilot is Active or AI Copilot is Disabled.
Choose which AI features members get
The Features section of the AI Copilot Settings page has one switch per AI feature. The switches only work while Enable AI Assistant is on.
| Switch | What it turns on |
|---|---|
| AI Writing Completion | AI continues writing in the rich-text editor |
| AI Actions | Enhance with AI in the post composer, and AI rewrite, polish, and summarize tools in the editor |
| AI Ask | The AI assistant chat, and the AI Assistant entry in your community's navigation |
| AI Course Outline | AI-drafted course outlines and quiz questions for course creators |
Turn switches on or off, then click Save. When AI Ask is off, the AI Assistant entry disappears and members who open the chat page are sent to the home page. AI Course Outline starts off in every community.
Name the AI assistant and set its greeting
The Assistant section controls how the AI assistant presents itself on the AI chat page, on the web and in the app. Leave a field empty to use the default.
- Under Avatar, click Upload and choose an image. A square image works best. To go back to the default icon, click Remove.
- Enter a Display name, up to 40 characters. It appears at the top of the chat. Without one, the assistant is called AI Assistant. The menu item that opens the chat keeps the label AI Assistant either way.
- Enter a Greeting title (up to 80 characters) and a Greeting subtitle (up to 160 characters). Members see them when they start a new chat. On the web, the defaults are "Hello there!" and "How can I help you today?"
- Click Save.
Add starter prompts to the AI assistant
Starter prompts (suggested prompts) are example questions shown when a member starts a new chat. A member clicks one to ask it right away.
- Under Starter prompts, click Add prompt.
- Type a question, up to 120 characters.
- Repeat for up to six prompts. To remove one, click the trash icon next to it.
- Click Save. Empty prompts are removed when you save.
Set the AI assistant's default answer scope
The Default answer scope decides which sources a new chat answers from:
- Auto (recommended): the widest scope your plan and community content settings allow.
- Knowledge Base only
- Community posts only
- Knowledge Base + Community
Members can still change the scope in the chat. On the web they use the Source Scope menu, which offers Knowledge Base, Community, and Hybrid; in the app it's Answer from. A scope only appears when it's available: Knowledge Base needs a plan that includes the knowledge base, Community needs Enable Community Content turned on, and Hybrid needs both. If you choose a scope that isn't available, new chats use the automatic default instead.
What members see in the AI assistant
- An AI Assistant entry in the community's navigation, for signed-in members only.
- Your avatar, display name, greeting, and starter prompts on a new chat.
- Answers with Sources that link to the original content.
- No content to answer from if neither a knowledge base nor community content is available. Add a source to fix it.
Your platform plan can limit how many AI requests each member makes per day. You can't change this limit on the Settings page. Admin → AI Copilot → Overview shows it on the Per-Member Daily Limit card. See Understand AI usage and credits.
