Charging for a community does not have to feel like a bait-and-switch. The trick is to keep the free experience genuinely valuable while making the paid tier an obvious upgrade for your most engaged members. Here is how to set up paid memberships on MateFlow, step by step. For the wider menu of ways to earn, see creator revenue models.
Before you start: connect Stripe
All payments run through your own Stripe account, so you keep control of payouts and the customer relationship. In Admin → Monetization → Stripe, connect (or create) an account and finish verification. Until Stripe is connected and fully enabled, MateFlow won't let you publish paid plans.
Step 1 — Design your member tiers
A tier is the level a member sits at — Free, Supporter, Pro, VIP. In Admin → Members → Tiers, create each tier with a name, badge color, and icon. The heart of a tier is space access: choose which spaces it unlocks and at what level.
- View — can see the space and read along.
- Participate — can post and reply.
- Exclusive — reserved, highest-access rooms.
Mark one tier as the default so every new member has a home before they ever upgrade.
Step 2 — Create a subscription plan
Tiers describe access; plans describe the price. In Admin → Monetization → Subscription Plans, create a plan and choose its purpose:
- Member tier — a paid upgrade for people who already have an account. Subscribing assigns them the tier you bind here (and its space access).
- Site access — a paywall at the front door: visitors must subscribe before they can register at all.
Set a monthly price and, optionally, a discounted annual price, a free-trial window, your currency, and a subscriber cap. Add a short list of benefits for the plan card and a welcome message shown right after checkout.
Step 3 — Keep the free tier real
Free members should still get a complete, useful experience. Paid tiers should add depth — premium spaces, cohorts, direct access, advanced content — rather than removing things people already relied on. That is what keeps a paywall from feeling like a betrayal.
Step 4 — Price for outcomes
Anchor pricing to the result members get, not the number of features. Two or three clear tiers convert better than a long menu. Because MateFlow moves members between tiers automatically when they subscribe or cancel, you are never granting or revoking access by hand.
| Tier | Typical price | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Free | — | Core spaces, intro content |
| Pro | Monthly / annual | Premium spaces, full courses |
| VIP | Higher monthly | Exclusive rooms, live events, direct access |
Step 5 — Watch the numbers
The Monetization Overview tracks MRR, total subscribers, churn, trial conversion, and average revenue per user, with per-plan detail in Revenue Analytics. On fees: MateFlow's platform transaction fee starts at 3% and falls toward 0% as you scale, on top of standard Stripe processing — so growth is rewarded, not penalized.
