Total member count looks great on a slide and tells you almost nothing. A number that only goes up hides the churn, the quiet spaces, and the members who signed up once and never came back. The indicators below actually predict whether a community is healthy โ and every one of them is already available in your MateFlow admin analytics.
Why vanity numbers mislead you
Signups measure marketing, not community. A space can add thousands of members and still be dying if nobody posts, returns, or renews. The fix is to watch participation and retention over time rather than a single cumulative total. Focus on the trend line, not the headline figure.
The seven metrics to watch
1. Active members (not signups)
The Member Analytics dashboard separates Total Members from Active Members and shows the Active Member Ratio โ the share of your community that actually did something in the period. A rising active count with a healthy ratio is the single best sign of life.
2. New members and their change rate
New members are tracked with a period-over-period change percentage, so you see acceleration or slowdown, not just a raw count. Pair this with active members: growth only matters if new arrivals become participants.
3. Retention rate and cohorts
The Retention Analytics view reports Day 1, Day 7, and Day 30 retention, plus a full cohort table. Each row is a signup cohort (monthly, quarterly, or yearly) and each column shows how many of those members are still active periods later. Deeper green means stronger retention. Cohorts expose whether a recent onboarding or content change actually made members stick.
4. Engagement volume: likes, comments, shares
The Engagement Analytics dashboard breaks activity into Total Likes, Total Comments, and Total Shares, each with a change percentage and an engagement-over-time trend. Comments and shares are worth more than likes โ they signal members creating value, not just consuming it.
5. Daily active users
The Daily Active Users trend shows the rhythm of your community. Steady or climbing DAU means habit; a sawtooth that only spikes on launch days means you are renting attention, not building it.
6. Per-space participation spread
Space Analytics compares every space by Active Members, New Posts, New Comments, Engagement rate, and Growth rate, and lets you sort by posts, active members, or engagement. If one or two spaces carry all the activity, that is a structure problem โ see the next steps below.
7. Activity patterns and peak hours
Member activity by hour of day surfaces your Peak Activity Hour and Most Popular Tier. Use it to time announcements, live events, and moderator coverage when your members are actually online.
How to read them together
| Metric | Healthy signal | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Active member ratio | Rising share of total | Flat while signups climb |
| Day 30 retention | Cohorts holding steady | Each new cohort worse |
| Comments and shares | Growing faster than likes | Only likes moving |
| Space spread | Activity across many spaces | One space carries everything |
A smaller community with rising participation and strong cohort retention is in far better shape than a large one quietly going quiet. Watch the direction, not the absolute number.
