A course library people finish, because they're not learning alone
Most self-paced academies are assembled out of two products that never speak to each other. The course sits in one tool; the discussion sits in another. A student who gets stuck in lesson four has to leave the player, open a second app, log in again, and post a question into a general feed where nobody knows which lesson they mean. Almost nobody does that. They close the tab instead, and the refund request arrives a week later. The split isn't a minor inconvenience โ it is where self-paced completion goes to die, because the moment of confusion and the place to resolve it are in different products.
This template assumes the course and the community are one thing. The Courses category holds a Start Here space that explains how the academy works, then Foundations and Advanced as real course spaces โ a searchable catalog, a learning player mixing text, video, file, embed, and quiz lessons, per-lesson notes, and a discussion panel that sits beside the lesson rather than three clicks away. Finishing a course issues a certificate with a public verification page anyone can check by number. Progress lives on the same member profile as the person's posts, so a student is a person, not a duplicated row in a second system.
The rest of the template is the part course platforms treat as an afterthought. Resources carries a Resource Library as a Media space in grid layout โ templates, swipe files, whatever the course tells people to download โ plus a Blog space for the public writing that brings new students in the door. Community carries a single Discussion space, and it is deliberately the only place members can post. One room, not eight empty ones. A quiet academy with one lively discussion space reads as alive; the same academy split across six half-dead spaces reads as abandoned. Start narrow, split later when the volume forces you to.
What actually breaks in a self-paced academy
The question never gets asked
When the course player and the discussion tool are separate products, a stuck student has to context-switch to ask for help. Most won't. Lesson-level discussion and notes sit next to the lesson here, so the question is asked where the confusion happened โ and the next student finds the answer already there.
Nobody knows if anyone finished
Video hosting tells you a file was played. It doesn't tell you a student understood anything. Quiz lessons gate progress so completion means something, progress shows up on the member's My Courses page, and the certificate that comes out at the end has a public verification page โ a credential, not a PDF anyone could fake.
Launch spike, then silence
Self-paced revenue is lumpy: a launch, then months of nothing while the community goes quiet and churn creeps. The Blog space keeps a public surface pulling in new students between launches, and the Discussion space gives existing members a reason to open the community on a week when they aren't watching a lesson.
Questions course creators ask before switching
No. The catalog, learning player, quizzes, progress tracking, and certificates are part of the community โ same login, same member identity, same billing. That is the point of the template: you aren't running a community tool next to a course tool and syncing access between them. Starter includes three courses; Growth and above make them unlimited, with no per-course fee.
Five types, mixed freely inside one course: text, video, file, embed, and quiz. Quiz lessons can gate progress, so a student has to demonstrate something before moving on. Each lesson carries personal notes and its own discussion panel. If you're expecting SCORM packages or a formal gradebook, we don't have those โ this is a creator-grade course product, not an institutional LMS.
Either. Courses ride the same membership and billing rails as everything else, so a course can be a paid product on its own or a perk that comes with a tier. You connect your own Stripe account, so the customer relationship and the payouts are yours rather than the platform's.
Honestly: that depends entirely on your reputation, not on ours. What we provide is the mechanism โ every certificate has a public verification page reachable by its number, with no login required, so a client or employer can confirm the credential is real. We are not an accrediting body and we don't pretend to be one.
Yes โ the template is a starting layout, not a cage. Rename Foundations and Advanced to your actual course names, drop the Blog space if you publish elsewhere, add spaces as your community grows. We'd suggest resisting the urge to add spaces on day one. Six empty rooms look worse than one busy one.
Members, yes โ a CSV import with batch invitations. Course content, no: you rebuild it from your original files, because most platforms publish no content export and nobody can build a one-click importer against a tool that doesn't offer one. The rebuild is real work, and we say so up front rather than discovering it with you mid-migration.
