Done well, gamification nudges the behavior you actually want. Done badly, it rewards noise and annoys your best members. The difference comes down to what you choose to reward and how carefully you roll it out. This guide walks through MateFlow's gamification system end to end so you can launch something members respect.
Everything lives under Admin → Settings → Gamification, split across four tabs: System, Rules, Rewards, and Leaderboard. A readiness meter and launch checklist at the top tell you whether your setup is safe to turn on.
Start with the system switch and points identity
The master Enable gamification toggle controls whether points, levels, badges, and the leaderboard appear anywhere in your community. Keep it off until your first earning rules and at least one visible reward are configured โ an empty program looks broken.
On the System tab you also set your points identity. Rename the reward currency from the generic "Points" to something that fits your brand (for example Credits, Sparks, or Rep) and pick a reward icon (zap, coins, medal, award, sparkles, or trophy). Two more switches decide public exposure: Show rank on profile and Show leaderboard.
Reward contribution, not volume
Points should recognize helpful, on-topic participation โ not raw message count. The Points rule engine (Rules tab) lets you grant points per action. Built-in actions include:
- Post created and Comment created
- Received like โ points earned when others react to your content
- Daily login, Profile completed, and Invite accepted
- A custom action for anything else
Each rule has a point value, a daily limit (cap how many times per day it can fire, so nobody farms the system), and an on/off switch. Keep the list short so members can actually understand how progression works. Rewarding likes received rather than posts written is one of the simplest ways to steer toward quality.
Levels for status, badges for proof
The Rewards tab holds two complementary layers. Use levels for broad standing and badges for specific achievements โ and avoid rewarding the same behavior in both.
Levels
A level ladder maps point thresholds to named tiers, each with an icon, color, and description. MateFlow flags a ladder as too shallow below two levels and recommends a three-step minimum. Best practice: anchor the first level at 0 points so every new member lands on a visible tier immediately, keep mid-tier gaps steady, and reserve the widest jump for the top "elite" tier so it signals real status while staying reachable.
Badges
Badges are a library of proof points. Each badge has a name, optional tier (bronze / silver / gold), icon, color, and display order, plus requirement fields grouped into three categories:
| Category | Requirement fields |
|---|---|
| Activity | Minimum points, posts, comments, or login days |
| Social | Minimum likes received |
| Monetization | Minimum subscription months or lifetime spend |
With Automatic badges enabled, members unlock a badge the moment they meet its requirements; switch to manual mode for curated, moderator-awarded achievements. Deactivating a badge keeps existing unlock records intact โ historical awards are never wiped.
Configure the leaderboard deliberately
On the Leaderboard tab, choose a default period (weekly, monthly, or all-time) and a size (1–100 ranked members, default 10). Three presets make the tradeoffs concrete:
- Competitive — weekly, top 10, for active communities that want recurring winners
- Recognition — monthly, top 25, wider rotation that stays interesting
- Legacy — all-time, top 10, for communities that emphasize historical status
All-time ranking quietly favors incumbents, so weekly or monthly windows usually produce healthier recurring engagement. Leaderboards can surface as sidebar widgets at the community and space level. The Points ledger at the bottom of this tab is an operations tool for auditing individual reward events when you need to troubleshoot.
Keep it optional
Make the mechanics visible to members who care and easy to ignore for those who do not. Gamification is seasoning, not the meal. Turn it on only once the launch checklist is green, then watch the points ledger and badge unlock counts for the first few weeks โ if one badge dominates unlocks, its threshold is probably too low.
