Launching a community is less about picking the perfect tool and more about the first 30 days. The communities that stick share one trait: they feel active and worth showing up to before they ask anyone to pay. This guide walks through the practical setup inside MateFlow, in the order that gets you there fastest. Your admin dashboard shows a Set up your community checklist that tracks the same milestones as you go.
Step 1 β Define who it is for
Before touching a setting, write one sentence: the member you are building for and the outcome they get. Everything below — spaces, branding, onboarding — should ladder back to that sentence. A narrow, specific community beats a broad, generic one every time.
Step 2 β Brand your community
Open Appearance → Branding and make the space feel like yours. Upload a logo (with a separate dark-mode version), choose how it appears in the header (wordmark, icon plus name, or icon only), and add a square app icon, a favicon, and a social-sharing image so links preview cleanly. No logo yet? Generate one from your community's name right in the dialog. From there, set your palette under Appearance → Themes and arrange your landing page under Appearance → Homepage.
Step 3 β Create your first spaces
Spaces are the rooms of your community. Resist the urge to build ten — start with two or three. Creating a space is a short wizard:
- Choose a type that fits the content: Post (a timeline feed), Media (photo/video grid), Blog (long-form articles), Chat (real-time messaging), Course (lessons and progress), Podcast, or Q&A. You can also start from a ready-made template.
- Set privacy: Public (anyone can find and join), Private (visible, but joining is controlled), or Secret (hidden, invite-only).
- Add details: a name, a category, and a clear description of what belongs there.
A common starting set: one Post space for general discussion, one for introductions, and one focused on your core topic.
Step 4 β Seed content before you invite anyone
An empty room kills momentum. Post the first few conversations yourself: a welcome thread, a question that invites easy replies, and one piece of genuinely useful content. New members should arrive to signs of life, not silence.
Step 5 β Set registration and onboarding
Under Settings → Registration, decide who can join and how. Then set up Settings → Onboarding: a welcome message and a short new-member checklist that gives every arrival a clear first action — complete a profile, join a space, or make a first post — within their first five minutes.
Step 6 β Invite a founding group
Go to Members and invite a small founding cohort by email or with a shareable invite link, assigning each person a role (member, moderator, or admin). A dozen engaged people who show up beats a thousand who never return. Grow the circle once conversations are flowing.
