Charging for a community does not have to feel like a bait-and-switch. The trick is to keep the free experience genuinely valuable while making the paid tier an obvious upgrade for your most engaged members.
Keep the free tier real
Free members should still get a complete, useful experience. Paid tiers add depth — premium spaces, cohorts, direct access, advanced content — rather than removing things people already relied on.
Price for outcomes
Anchor pricing to the result members get, not the number of features. Two or three clear tiers convert better than a long menu. Native subscriptions, gating, and tier movement should be automatic so you are not managing access by hand.
